What is Dirty Santa?

Dirty Santa does not refer to…(ahem) “adult gifts.” Dirty Santa is a family game where guests bring wrapped gifts, usually worth around the $10-15 price point. Guests draw numbers. When it's their turn, guests either steal an opened present from another player (hence the “dirty Santa” moniker) OR choose from the pile of unopened gifts under the tree. The game is also called Yankee Swap in some parts of the world.

What's the difference between a White Elephant Gift Exchange and a Dirty Santa Gift Exchange?

Sometimes people use the names interchangeably. Dirty Santa is similar to a White Elephant exchange party, however, the White Elephant party game is usually made up of gag gifts. Whereas, Dirty Santa gifts are generally unique or desirable gifts that people will love.

How do you play this bad Santa game? Here are the simple Dirty Santa rules.

-All players are given a number randomly. So, if there are 10 players, put numbers 1-10 in a hat to be drawn by each player.

-The player who pulled #1 goes first.

-Player #1 selects a Dirty Santa gift from the pile, opens it, and shows it to everyone.

-Player #2 can choose to steal #1's opened gift OR pick a new gift from the pile of Dirty Santa gifts. This continues with each subsequent player.

-A gift can be stolen more than once, but no more than 3 times. If your gift is stolen, you can't steal it right back. You have to steal another gift or choose one from the other wrapped presents.

-When every gift has been chosen, typically the person who drew #1 is allowed one more turn to steal any gift, as long as it hasn’t been stolen more than 3 times. If they choose not to steal, but rather keep the gift they have, the game is over. If they want to steal a gift, they swap theirs with another player and the game is over.

What are good Dirty Santa game tips?

  1. Bring a gift you want to keep for yourself. This way, if you don’t like the gifts you’re seeing, you can choose yours when it’s your turn! Beware if it’s a good Dirty Santa gift, people may try to steal it from you!

  2. Anticipate who is coming to the party. If it’s a co-ed gathering, you want to buy gifts that are good for anyone. There’s nothing worse than a man unwrapping nail stickers and polish remover as his gift. Poor fella.

  3. Don’t buy a gift with the price in mind first. That’s a sure-fire way to buy JUNK! Don’t walk through the store saying, “what can I buy for $15?” Think of things you WANT but haven’t bought yet! Or think of homemade items you love receiving or eating! For example, someone made a tub of homemade peppermint ice cream this year, and it was DELISH!!
