Where to go: Mentone, AL

Drive time: 2 hours 37 minutes

What to do: retreat to a mountain-top getaway, ski, and hike.

The beauty of Mentone, AL, is that you can hide away and relax OR you can do all the outdoorsy things and make it an adventure-filled getaway. Either way, you’re sure to have a wonderful time hidden away in the hills of Mentone where the cell phone service is almost nonexistent.

The scenery is woodsy, the small town eclectic, and the shopping is full of antique finds.

The main street of Mentone reminds me of an artsy California town, riddles with galleries and restaurants stowed away beneath towering trees. The diverse town is enough to explore on a weekend getaway, especially if you like farmers’ markets and hippie-style gift shops.

Where to eat:

Wildflower Cafe (pictured below)

Voted Best Cafe in Alabama, this hippie-chic eatery is a staple to the Mentone experience. Selected as one of the Top 100 Places to Eat in the South Before You Die, they have live music, a country store, and great hours —they are open 7-days a week!

Be sure to try their famous Tomato Pie when you’re in town! If you can get past the unappealing name, ordering this southern legend will be worth it.
